City of Girls * La città delle ragazze
I have seen the film EAT PRAY LOVE several times but I hadn't read any book by its book's author Elizabeth Gilbert until CITY OF GIRLS. We are told the story by the main character, Vivian Morris, who's writing it to a certain Angela in order to explain how she knew Angela's father and what was the nature of their relationship.
It all begins in 1940, when Vivian's sent to New York to stay with her father's sister, who owns an old theatre. Vivian's only 19 years old, she's wealthy and doesn't know anything about life yet, but she's very skilled at dressmaking. She enjoys a crazy and free-spirited summer with her new friend Celia, she gets to know some celebrities, she falls in love, until one day she makes a mistake that will greatly affect her life. Meanwhile, WWII enters Americans lives too, people's lives change and Vivian grows up, experiencing many important developments in American society.
CITY OF GIRLS is a well written, nostalgic yet not self-indulgent book. It's impossible not to feel like being in New York with Vivian, walking around the city, working at the theatre, seeing real change happen. This is a great book for relaxing evenings or to read on the beach, and it would be an excellent TV series.

Ho visto il film MANGIA, PREGA, AMA molte volte ma non ho letto nessun libro scritto dall’autrice dell’omonimo libro fino a LA CITTÀ DELLE RAGAZZE (Rizzoli). Veniamo a conoscere la storia direttamente dalla penna di Vivian Morris, la protagonista, che la racconta a una certa Angela per spiegarle come conoscesse suo padre e quale fosse la natura del loro rapporto.
Tutto comincia nel 1940, quando Vivian viene mandata a New York per stare con la zia paterna, che possiede un teatro. Vivian ha solo 19 anni, è abbiente e non sa ancora niente della vita, ma è bravissima a ideare e cucire abiti. Si gode un’estate pazza e libera con la sua nuova amica Celia, conosce delle celebrità, si innamora, finché un giorno non commette un errore che influenzerà grandemente la sua vita. Nel frattempo, la seconda guerra mondiale entra anche nelle vite degli americani, la vita delle persone cambia e Vivian cresce e sperimenta i grandi cambiamenti della società americana.
LA CITTÀ DELLE RAGAZZE è un libro ben scritto, nostalgico ma non autoindulgente. Sembra di trovarsi a New York con Vivian, a camminare per la città, lavorare nel teatro e vedere i cambiamenti avvenire davanti ai propri occhi. Questo è un gran libro per serate rilassanti o da leggere in spiaggia, e sarebbe un’eccellente serie tv.
